Flower Care Tips
A little extra care can make a big difference for any size flower arrangement or fresh flower bouquet.
Keep them in a cool spot (65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit; 18 to 22 degrees Celsius), away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, direct drafts from a ceiling fan, and the tops of televisions or radiators. (Appliances like televisions give off heat, causing flowers to dehydrate.)
The key to prolonging the vase-life of the roses is to keep the water fresh. This allows a clean flow of water to the head of the flower. To ensure the fresh flow of water to the head of the flower, cut the stem, underwater, at the base frequently. Use a good, sharp trimmer to avoid crushing the stems. Crushed stems are proven to have half the vase-life of well-cut roses.
Steps to Longer Lasting Roses
Preservative Solution
Placing your roses in a new preservative solution to ensure proper hydration is a very important step to having long lasting roses. There are a number of preservatives available to retailers that ensure roses take up water properly.
Remove foliage that will be under water. Cut 2 to 3 cm off the bottom of the stem using a sharp tool that cuts cleanly and does not crush the stem. Cutting roses underwater ensures that air will not be incorporated into the stem, which may lead to a bent neck.
Colors available: Red Roses, Lavender Roses, Orange Roses, Yellow Roses, Pink and Peach Roses, White Roses.
Vase Arrangements
Keep the vase filled with water containing floral food provided by your florist. Be sure to follow the directions on the package. If the solution becomes cloudy, replace it entirely. If possible, recut the stems by removing one to two inches with a sharp knife. Remove leaves that will be below the waterline. Leaves in water will promote bacterial growth that can harm the flowers.
If you purchase loose flowers for your own arrangements you should also consider these tips:
When selecting flowers, look for flowers with upright, firm petals and buds beginning to open. Yellow, spotted or drooping leaves are signs of age.
Poinsettia Care
Provide room temperatures between 68 - 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Generally speaking, if you are comfortable, so is your poinsettia.
Water your plant when the soil feels dry to the touch.
Place your plant in indirect sunlight for at least six hours per day. If direct sun can't be avoided, diffuse the light with a shade or sheer curtain.
Tulips
Vase life is variable depending on varieties and can range from 4 days to 2 weeks. If stems are bent, wrap them tightly in wet paper and place in water with a light directly above. Re-cut stems and place in tepid water.
Azaleas
Azaleas require bright light but not direct sun. Water plants regularly. Under-watering is the main cause for leaves to drop. When planting outdoors, loosen the root ball and plant in a shallow hole with the roots fanned out horizontally.
How to Care for Your Phalaenopsis Orchid
Before you water your phalaenopsis, make sure the top 1-2 inches of the growing media is dry to touch. If it is still wet, do not apply any more water. Orchid plant needs to be watered every 7-10 days. If your plant is showing a lot of roots, whether inside or outside the pot, you know it's about time to re-pot your orchid. Orchids need lots of bright-diffuse sunlight. 10-15 hours per day is preferred.
